The Need to Intercede

Poverty

According to African Economic Outlook (AEO) 2020, almost two-thirds of the population lives below the poverty line (2017 estimate), and the youth unemployment rate is particularly high (65%). Food security remains a major challenge, and 6 of 10 children were stunted in 2017.  Food security remains a major challenge, and 6 of 10 children were stunted in 2017.

Gender Inequality

Care Burundi baseline study shows that the woman is expected to carry out a disproportionate amount of the burden of the family’s work, whatever the man assigns to her. Additionally, she is expected to give birth within about a year and a half of the wedding. If a couple is unable to conceive, it is always perceived as a fault of the woman. In regard to land issues given that the farms generally belong to men, the women who work on them are considered to be working for their husbands, consequently, the revenues from the farms which are considered as the main household income are managed and controlled by the husbands.

Business Training

Empowering and equipping women in businesses, education, & mindset transformation is direly needed in Burundi. Most Burundian children live more than 30 minutes away from their closest health care facility, and about 80% of Burundian children are cited as living in accommodations using ‘non-improved combustibles’ which produce particle smoke, at once heightening the risk of respiratory diseases, and, potentially reducing the risk of malaria for those who do not have mosquito nets, because smoke can deter insects (Ramful et. al, 2017). Save the Children, 2019 reported that half of the children in Burundi suffer from stunting due to malnutrition.
